The Silent Grief of Miscarriage: What No One Tells You (And How to Begin Healing)
There is a grief that exists in silence. It lives in the bathroom, in the first signs of blood, in the hospital waiting room, in the scan, in the look of anguish on your partner's face, and in the months that follow when the world moves on, but you can't.
It's a grief that doesn't always get a funeral, doesn't always get acknowledged, and for so many women, is carried alone.
If you've experienced miscarriage or stillbirth, this blog is for you, the woman who begs for an answer and can’t yet make sense of this, the one googling at 2am, trying to understand why you can't get through your day, the one who walked past a maternity shop and had to sit down because you couldn't breathe, who declined her best friend's baby shower because you couldn’t bear the celebration, knowing what you have just lost, the one who couldn’t tell her family, in the fear they would misunderstand you.
Why Pregnancy Loss & Miscarriage Grief Is Different
When you lose a pregnancy, you don't just lose a baby.
You lose a future, a family, and the version of yourself who was going to become a mother to that child. You lose the name you’d spent hours deliberating over, the room you'd already imagined painting and the due date you were counting down to.
Because society often doesn't recognise early pregnancy loss as a "real" bereavement, women are left without the language, the rituals, or the permission to grieve fully. This level of grief is often invisible, but the pain is inescapable.
"I don't believe in the universe or a god anymore." This is one of the most heartbreaking things a client recently shared with me. It was said during our first session, after she had lost 3 babies in a row. And rather than anger, it was said with complete exhaustion. A kind of hollowness when your faith in life, your body, or something greater has been shattered.
Pregnancy loss can take your sense of safety, the trust you hold in your body and sometimes, your entire world view.
Over the years, I've sat with women carrying all kinds of pregnancy loss stories. Some had experienced a single miscarriage and felt completely blindsided by the depth of their grief. Some had endured multiple losses, fertility treatments, traumatic births, or years of uncertainty. And some had to make the incredibly terrifying decision to terminate their pregnancy.
What feels most important to share here is that there is no ‘right way’ to grieve a pregnancy loss, only your way.
How Grief Shows Up Within Pregnancy Loss & Miscarriage
A Jealousy That Feels Shameful
One of the most common, and most unspoken parts of pregnancy loss grief is the
complicated emotions that arise when you see other pregnant women or new babies.
"I struggle to see pregnant women and not feel jealous"
“I can’t help but question why her, and not me”
If you carry guilt or shame that comes with these thoughts, I promise you, you’re not bad, unkind or selfish (which are all feelings clients have shared with me). Jealousy is a really normal part of the grief, and rather than wanting bad things for someone else, it's about the ache of wanting what you had, what you lost and what might feel so far out of reach now.
The Terror of Trying Again
"I am so terrified of trying for a baby again"
After loss, the idea of trying again can feel terrifying rather than hopeful because hope
now carries a shadow, shaped by the knowledge of what can go wrong. Every symptom, scan, trip to the bathroom and every moment of waiting can become loaded with fear.
This is often your nervous system’s way of trying to protect you as the mind learns from painful experiences and begins scanning for danger, attempting to prevent further heartbreak.
So many women find themselves caught between two powerful forces: the deep longing to try again and the terror of being heartbroken once more.
The Deep Yearning to Be a Parent
Underneath all of it, the shock, disbelief, jealousy, the fear, anger and the loss of faith, is often something even deeper. A desperate, aching desire to bring a child into the world. A love that existed before the baby arrived, and continues long after your loss.
What I want you to remember is that within this longing, that love still exists. And while it may not feel like it right now, healing does not mean letting go of that love.
In fact, many women discover that when grief is given space to be felt, witnessed, and processed, they can remain deeply connected to their baby while also reconnecting with themselves. The loss remains part of their story, but it no longer becomes the entire story.
Over time, many women find they can hold both grief and joy, remembrance and hope, love for the baby they lost and openness to what lies ahead. By no means does healing mean forgetting, however you are creating enough space within yourself to live fully again while honouring what was lost.
Why So Many Women Struggle to Move Forward with Their Lives
One of the hardest things about pregnancy loss is that life often expects you to move forward long before your heart is ready.
You may notice the messages stop, friends stop checking in, your partner may grieve differently, people tell you to stay positive and some might even suggest ‘you should feel grateful you can get pregnant at all.’
So many women learn to carry their grief differently. Some find they cope by withdrawing, distracting themselves, throwing themselves into an endless stream of work events or social activities, some become angry or easily irritated and some feel like they’re just ‘existing’ in their life, without being able to experience it. Yet with the right support, many women find they can move from surviving their grief to carrying it with a sense of gentleness.
They begin to feel more connected to their body, more present in their relationships, and less consumed by fear, guilt, or emotional overwhelm.
What Is EFT Tapping and How Does It Help With Miscarriaige Grief & Pregnancy Loss Support?
EFT (Emotional Freedom Techniques), also known as tapping, is a therapeutic
approach that combines elements of cognitive therapy with acupressure. It involves
gently tapping on specific meridian points on the body while acknowledging difficult thoughts, emotions, and physical sensations, so that your body starts to respond differently.
Support for pregnancy loss, EFT tapping works on several layers:
Nervous system regulation: Loss activates a stress response in the body. Tapping helps to signal safety to the nervous system and reduce the intensity of triggers so you can move through baby showers, pregnancy announcements, and hard anniversaries without feeling overwhelmed by your emotions.
Memory Reprocessing: EFT incorporates gentle techniques to process memories or flashbacks without requiring you to relive the trauma in detail. It works with the emotional charge, so you can think about the scan, the hospital or the moment you found out, without it flooding your body all over again.
Body-based (somatic) healing: Grief often lives in the body, the tight chest, the hollow stomach and the heavy limbs. Tapping addresses the physical dimensions of grief that talking alone can't always reach so you can breathe fully again, sleep without that weight sitting on your chest, and feel more present in the day to day.
Identity and belief work: Beliefs like "my body is broken" can often arise after loss. These can be gently explored and shifted through EFT, so that you can experience greater self compassion, trust your body again, release self blame and feel worthy of hope, whether that’s trying again or simply re-engaging with the world.
What becomes possible when grief and pregnancy loss is well supported?

Whilst grief is not something to fix or ‘get over,’ it is something that often requires support.
The women I work with aren't trying to forget their babies, they're trying to stop feeling hijacked by the grief. They're trying to make it through a baby shower without having to leave early, to trust their body again, to enjoy intimacy with their partner, and to feel hope without immediately expecting heartbreak.
For women whose loss is intertwined with trauma, anxiety, fertility challenges, medical experiences, or previous unresolved grief, healing can also create space to:
Think about pregnancy, or your baby, without becoming completely overwhelmed
Feel less trapped in guilt, self-blame, or "what if" thoughts
Experience more peace around pregnancy, fertility, and the future
Feel more connected to your body again, like it’s yours rather than someone else’s
Navigate pregnancy announcements and baby-related events without holding your breathe
Reconnect with your partner and your intimate life
Experience moments of joy, hope, and excitement without feeling guilty for doing so
Honour your baby while continuing to move forward
Whilst the loss will always matter, many of the women I work with share that they’ve learnt to hold both the grief, and moments of joy.
Pregnancy loss grief can be one of the most isolating experiences a woman goes through and yet so many women continue to carry it alone. EFT tapping offers a gentle, evidence-informed pathway to process the grief, release the fear, and begin to trust again, in your body, the future, and yourself.
